The play’s the thing! The thing that lets us enjoy a shared human experience. It is a little strange, and wonderful, how we can feel at one with complete strangers as we attend the theatre. And actors love full houses because they always involve an exciting exchange of energy.
Your financial help and moral support have been key factors in our survival during these last 2 plus years. But we are very aware that variations of the COVID virus are still with us, and that we are not completely free of the constraints that it has brought to our lives. And so, our 3rd fundraising campaign begins, with a goal of $50,000. Your support is crucial if we are to continue to produce quality theatre at a modest cost to the community.
We have always concentrated on the safety of both our patrons and our cast and crew. As you know, this has included installing air filtration and restricting house sizes, which has all had a significant impact on both our income and expenses. Costs of everything, including our rent (our largest expense), have increased as our income has decreased. Government grants have ended.
Total attendance for the last 3 plays of our 2019-2020 season was 2,386, whereas we only had a total attendance of 1,314 for the most recent 3 plays in 2022, a drop of some 45% of sales.
Understandably, many people are still hesitant to attend the theatre. It will probably be some time before we return to the size of houses which have kept us alive for 48 years. Some commentators think it will take years for arts organizations to return to previous attendance levels.
With an unflagging belief in the positive value of theatre, we have launched our full 5-play season for 2022-2023, for the first time since 2019. The Prisoner of Second Avenue opened September 16th to appreciative audiences. We have been so excited to renew acquaintance with many of you when you have attended our recent productions, and are hoping you will purchase a subscription for 2022-2023 so that we can see even more of you! We have recently signed a new 5 year lease for our space. We are well underway to planning our 50th anniversary in 2023-2024. So, we are looking ahead — and not planning to go anywhere.
